Our name "GeneaNet" is made up of « Genea » and « Net ».
« Genea », is an abbreviation for Genealogy. So what is genealogy ? It's the search for ancestors, starting from oneself, our parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc., and also the search for our cousins (those that descend form an ancestor in common with us).
« Net », stands for internet. If you're reading these lines you already know all about that!
SOME HISTORY
GeneaNet was started in 1996 when two engineers whose passion was genealogy realised what a fantastic tool the Internet would be for their genealogical research. Their idea was to share, not the whole of their respective family trees, but what genealogists call, in their jargon, their « flash list », all in a same database.
GeneaNet today :
In 2000, GeneaNet became a limited company in order to have more financial and human means, develop the database and offer more and more services to genealogists. Since then many complementary services to the database have been added.
The Privilege Club:
To insure a reliable financial backing for the GeneaNet project, the"Privilege Club" was created at the end of 2001. This Club offers special services to its members (and shows your affection for GeneaNet!).
FLASH LISTS
A flash list is a list of surnames included in a genealogy, associated with the villages where these ancestors lived. Often, this file shows beginning and ending years for which information on each name is available.
Example : your name is Dupont, you were born in 1950 and your relatives were from Paris for about a century, except for the oldest grandparent, John, who came from Nantes. You only know he was born in 1830. You will dispaly all your Dupont family in a flash list like this:
