Sartre’s Gravestone Mystery Solved
The plaque disappeared from Sartre’s grave in the Parisian graveyard Montparnasse shortly after his death in 1980.
Now it appears that the plaque was stolen by Colombian poet Arnulfo Valencia.
The poet told his friend, author William Ospina, what he had done, but he did not believe him. When Valencia died recently, he told his daughter on his deathbed that he had the plaque. Valencia’s relatives want to auction the 20x30-centimetre marble stone, which has broken into 4 pieces, and give the proceeds to a fund for Colombian poets.
